Paul Jenkins nasce nel 1923 a Kansas City, nello stato del Missouri (USA).
Studia presso il Kansas City Art Institute. Nel 1940 incontra Frank Lloyd Wright, interpellato dal prozio dell’artista, il reverendo Burris Jenkins, per ricostruire la sua chiesa distrutta da un incendio. Durante lo stesso periodo, il giovane artista visita Thomas Hart Benton per discutere con lui riguardo alla sua intenzione di diventare pittore. Nel 1944 entra nella U. S. Naval Air Corps. Nel 1948 si trasferisce a New York City dove studia presso la Art Students League con Yasuo Kuniyoshi (quattro anni) e con Morris Kantor. Durante quel periodo, conosce Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock e Barnett Newman. Nel 1953, viaggia in Europa, lavorando per tre mesi a Taormina, in Sicilia prima di stabilirsi a Parigi. Dal 1955 in poi, l’artista suddivide il suo tempo tra New York e Parigi.
Nel 1955 presenta la sua prima mostra personale negli Stati Uniti presso la Dusanne Zoe Gallery di Seattle. L’anno successivo espone una personale a New York presso la Martha Jackson Gallery. Negli anni ’50, Jenkins viene riconosciuto sia a New York che in Europa per le sue opere di carattere astratto espressionista.
La sua opera è caratterizzata non solo dall’uso di colori vivaci, ma anche dalla ricerca filosofica e mistica che è alla base del processo creativo dell’artista.
