Nasce nel 1940 a Tokyo, Giappone, città dove vive e a cui la sua opera fotografica è dedicata. Il padre si occupa di fotografia e Araki mostra interesse verso questa forma d’arte fin da giovanissimo. Nel 1963 consegue un master in fotografia e cinematografia presso l’università di Chiba, dove sviluppa il suo interesse per il cinema neo-realista italiano e quello della nouvelle vague francese.  Questa influenza pervade le sue opere contraddistinte da aspetti diaristici ed erotici, ispirate anche dalla crescente urbanizzazione e commercializzazione del Giappone del dopo guerra, con riferimenti a giocattoli, bar Karaoke ed altri aspetti della cultura contemporanea nipponica. Nel 1964 vince il premio Taiyo per i giovani fotografi giapponesi e nel 1965 realizza la sua prima mostra personale al Shinjuku Station Building di Tokyo. Nel 1971 sposa la sua compagna, Yoko Aoki, e da questo momento si interessa sempre più al nudo e al corpo femminile, interesse che lo porterà a raggiungere la vera fama.  Dagli anni ’80 espone in tutto il mondo e il suo lavoro è apprezzato sia dal pubblico che dalla critica.
