Robin Rhode nasce nel 1976 a Cape Town, in Sud Africa. Attualmente vive e lavora a Berlino.
Nel 1998 ottiene il diploma di Belle Arti presso il Technikon Witwaterstrand di Johannesburg, seguito da un diploma postgrado conseguito nel 2000 alla South African School of Film, Television and Dramatic Art di Johannesburg,.

Robin Rhode, sin dall’inizio della sua carriera artistica, lavora in prevalenza con materiali di facile accesso come il carboncino, il gesso e la pittura che gli permettono di dare vita a delle performances durante le quali l’artista interagisce con gli oggetti da lui disegnati in spazi pubblici e su supporti diversi, quali muri, campi di gioco o strade.
A partire dalla performance crea delle sequenze fotografiche e delle animazioni digitali che permettono di perpetuare l’opera, di natura effimera.

Rhode trasforma le forme bidimensionali (figurate o astratte) in elementi di narrazione, in presenze immaginate con le quali interagisce anche fisicamente. Lo spettatore è a sua volta invitato a penetrare nell’universo immaginario dell’artista.

L’opera di Robin Rhode si caratterizza per una forte pluridisciplinarità e per la riflessione costante sulla relazione che l’uomo serba con il desiderio, il gioco e l’immaginazione. L’utilizzo del monocromo bianco e nero, oltre a permettere un lavoro più rapido, permette all’artista di ridurre la sua estetica all’essenziale.
Per mezzo della sua produzione artistica, Robin Rhode ama porre degli spunti di riflessione sociale, a volte provocatori e non esita a far partecipare attivamente gli spettatori, come fu il caso durante la sua performance Skipping Rope presso il Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris all’occasione dell’esposizione I Still Believe in Miracles / Drawing Space (part I) nel 2005 quando invitò il pubblico ad interagire con una corda immaginaria.
