Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) è nato vicino a Whitewater nello stato americano del Winsconsin, una zona dove gli indiani erano ancora numerosi. Ha ventun anni quando il massacro di Wounded Knee segna la fine della cultura indiana. Inizia a riprendere gli Indiani della riserva di Puget Sound. Nel 1891 si trasferisce a Seattle dove inizia a lavorare in uno studio fotografico del quale successivamente rileva l’attività. Esegue principalmente ritratti realizzati in studio e fotografie di paesaggi. Probabilmente l’idea di raccogliere un’ampia documentazione sulla vita e le tradizioni delle tribù indiane dell’America settentrionale nasce intorno ai primi anni del 1900. Si trattava di documentare con parole e foto la storia, lo stile di vita, le cerimonie, le leggende e i miti delle tribù indiane ancora raggiungibili.
In seguito realizza anche un film sulla vita degli indiani. Nel 1919 si trasferisce a Hollywood dove lavora come direttore della fotografia per gli Studios di Hollywood e realizza le fotografie per film quali l’epopea di Cecil B.De Mille “I Dieci Comandamenti”.
